Wainscoting on Dining Room Accent Walls

I have always admired wainscoting. I think it adds character to walls, and works well with any decorating style. While watching an episode of Fixer Upper, I saw this style of wainscoting added to a home office area. I decided it would look great on the accent walls in my dining room. I have two narrow walls on either side of the china cabinet niche. I wanted something vertical that would enhance and fill in the wall.

I chose two sizes of crown molding at a home improvement store. They are pretty inexpensive. There are many styles to choose from. I picked a simple style.

I painted the molding the same color as the wall. I used Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. I decided to paint the wood first and then make cuts. I made two frames using my mitre saw. I cut 45 degree angles, and then used wood glue to adhere the corners. I had the wood on a flat surface for the glue to dry.

I nailed the finished frames in with finishing nails. I covered up the nail holes with wood fill and then touched up with the paint. I also caulked the frames to the wall, then painted the caulk. Paintable caulk is a must have. It blends all crown molding into the walls seamlessly.
